For those who missed Tuesday’s release of the Senate Inquiry report into National Organic Standard Bill 2024, the Senate Committee has put forward its findings. The full document is available to view here.
Key takeaways from the Senate Committee report
While the report clearly endorses the benefits of organic domestic regulation for Australia, the Committee has recommended that the Senate not pass the Bill in its current form.
In its recommendations, the Committee noted some issues needing to be resolved with the National Organic Standard Bill, related to;
- The proposed definition of “organic”
- Providing legislative power for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to act as the regulator
The Committee also called for a ‘scoping exercise’, led by the Department of Agriculture, to be conducted. A full Organic Development Group (ODG) media release on the report’s release is available here.
